Roman church of Gargilesse

The details are of a taste and a rich simplicity. One goes down to a crypt by a beautiful staircase where the ravine and the torrent can be seen. "

The 12th. century Roman church is a masterpiece and built in a charming, harmonious style. The details of the sculptures are simple but richly carved. A stone staircase leads down to the crypt which dominates the river. The church is dedicated to Our Lady. The west wall was rebuilt after demolition in an unknown era. The tomb of Lord Guillaume de Naillac 1238-1266 is to be found inside. There are 127 sculptured cornices in and outside the building, with scenes from the Old and New Testament.
The vast crypt is decorated with fresco paintings from the 12th and 15th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary on the alter was bought back from the crusades by a Lord of Gargilesse.

The church can be visited all year round and in the summer season guided visits are organised. Ask at the tourist Office.
